2006Plus Update: Terror Tower, Extreme Ironman & Huge World Fixes

Over the past week we have been working through some large batches of new content, backend improvements and general fixes 2006Plus has received so far. This update has involved everything from a completely new end-game challenge, a brutal new Ironman mode, major NPC interaction repairs, bot improvements, boss work, quality-of-life changes and a large amount of under-the-hood cleanup designed to make the game world feel much more complete and reliable.

The main focus of this update is our brand new Terror Tower minigame, followed closely by the introduction of Extreme Ironman. Alongside those headline additions, we have also spent a considerable amount of time going back through older content and repairing things that had quietly stopped working as the server moved further towards the newer 377 map, NPC and content data.

Terror Tower

Terror Tower is a brand new solo boss gauntlet built specifically for 2006Plus. Rather than being a traditional fixed-wave minigame, Terror Tower is designed around risk, endurance and player choice. The deeper you go, the more you stand to gain, but everything you have earned during the run remains at risk until you decide to leave with it.

Players begin by choosing a selection of bosses that they have already defeated elsewhere in the game. You must have at least four eligible bosses available before starting, and the Tower only allows you to choose bosses that you have actually killed before. This means the content naturally opens up as your account progresses and your boss killcounts increase.

Once inside, the Tower creates a private solo instance and begins selecting bosses from your chosen pool. Only one boss is active at a time, and the selection system uses a shuffled deck so the same boss is not simply repeated over and over. Once all available choices have been used, the pool can reshuffle while avoiding an immediate duplicate where possible.

Every boss encounter takes place inside the private Terror Tower arena, using the real boss combat logic wherever possible rather than simplified copies. This means bosses retain their familiar attacks, combat styles and mechanics while being adapted safely for the Tower instance.

Risk It or Take the Loot

The core of Terror Tower is the decision you make after every successful delve. Once a boss has been defeated, its rewards are placed into the Tower's temporary reward pool rather than being immediately handed to the player.

You are then given the choice to either take your loot and leave or risk everything and continue. If you leave, the accumulated rewards are safely granted to you. If you continue, another boss is prepared and the run moves deeper into the Tower.

However, if you die, fail the run, log out incorrectly or otherwise leave the challenge through an invalid route, the live Tower reward pool is lost. This creates a genuine risk-versus-reward system rather than simply being another place to farm bosses safely.

The reward system has been built around an escrow-style system so that items are not permanently awarded until a successful cashout. This was especially important for rare rewards and pets, as it prevents a player from receiving permanent credit for an item and then losing the run afterwards.

Reward Ladder

Following a successful boss kill, the Tower now uses a dedicated reward ladder within the arena. Rather than immediately forcing a reward interface onto the player, the reward ladder appears after the encounter and can be used to view the current Tower rewards and make the next decision.

Rare encounters can also use a special visual version of the ladder so that particularly valuable rewards have a more exciting presentation. This system gives us room to continue expanding Terror Tower rewards in future without needing to redesign the entire minigame.

Endless Delves

Terror Tower is not designed around a fixed final wave. It is an endless challenge. You can continue delving for as long as you are willing to risk your accumulated reward pool.

We have already tested runs reaching more than twenty delves in a single session, with the instance system, boss transitions, reward storage and encounter sequencing remaining stable throughout.

Each successfully completed delve also contributes towards your personal Terror Tower progression. The Tower keeps track of how deep you have successfully reached, allowing us to build permanent records and future hiscore support around your best performances.

Terror Tower Drop Rate Bonus

The Tower also has its own progressive drop-rate mechanic. As a run continues deeper, the Tower reward system can increase the effective drop-rate bonus applied to eligible rewards. This gives players another reason to continue rather than immediately cashing out after every boss.

The system has been deliberately separated from the rest of the game so Terror Tower drop-rate rules do not accidentally affect normal boss drops outside the minigame. It is also capped independently, allowing the Tower to provide meaningful progression without turning rare drops into guaranteed rewards.

Boss Killcounts & Existing Content

Bosses killed inside Terror Tower still integrate with the wider account systems where appropriate. We have taken care to ensure that boss killcount handling remains authoritative and is only committed once per real encounter, preventing duplicate killcounts or rewards from repeated death callbacks.

The Tower also makes extensive use of existing boss mechanics and reward helpers rather than introducing a completely separate duplicate system. This means future changes to bosses can be carried into the Tower more safely while preserving their normal-world behaviour.

Instance Stability

A large amount of work has gone into making Terror Tower instances safe and reliable. During testing we discovered a particularly difficult issue where an unrelated Fight Caves cleanup path could accidentally destroy a Terror Tower instance if both systems happened to reuse the same region UID.

This was fixed by introducing proper runtime ownership tracking so Fight Caves can only destroy the exact instance that it created. The same principle has also been applied to stale login recovery so a player returning after a disconnect cannot accidentally remove another minigame's instance.

This work may not be visible during normal gameplay, but it is extremely important for keeping instanced content stable as 2006Plus continues to add more solo and group encounters.

Safe Death Behaviour

Terror Tower is treated as a safe minigame for your normal carried equipment, while still maintaining the risk of losing the Tower-specific reward pool. This keeps the challenge focused on how far you are willing to push the run without turning a failed attempt into an account-ending equipment loss.

Followers and pets are also restricted appropriately within the Tower so they cannot interfere with encounters, and rejected summons are handled without consuming the pet item.

Extreme Ironman

The second major addition is Extreme Ironman, our most punishing account mode yet.

Extreme Ironman takes the familiar Hardcore Ironman concept and pushes it much further. An Extreme Ironman account has a single active life for unsafe content. If the account dies an unsafe death, it does not downgrade into a normal Ironman mode. Instead, the account is permanently retired.

Once retired, the account can no longer simply continue playing as another game mode. The death is stored permanently and the account is treated as deceased for Extreme Ironman purposes.

Permanent Retirement

The retirement system has been integrated into the server's death flow after all known safe-death checks. This means content that is already considered safe, including supported minigames and special areas, continues to behave correctly without accidentally retiring the account.

For genuine unsafe deaths, the server records the death state before removing the player from the world. This was designed very carefully to avoid situations where a crash, reconnect or incomplete save could allow a dead Extreme Ironman to return.

Extreme Ironman death information has also been prepared for its own hiscore and deceased-account tracking, giving the mode its own identity instead of treating it as a slightly modified Hardcore Ironman.

Golden Identity

Extreme Ironman accounts use their own visual identity, including a gold-themed Ironman appearance and dedicated chat icon. The mode has been intentionally designed to stand out immediately when seen in-game.

Drop Rate Bonus

While Extreme Ironman is substantially more dangerous, it also receives a permanent drop-rate advantage while alive. Qualifying drops receive an additional flat bonus, giving players a meaningful reward for choosing such a high-risk account type.

This bonus is handled separately from unrelated drop-rate systems so that the mode's advantage can be controlled without affecting ordinary accounts.

Safe Content

A large part of implementing Extreme Ironman correctly was identifying the difference between a genuine unsafe death and a minigame death. Existing safe content such as Fight Caves, Terror Tower and other recognised safe activities is checked before the retirement branch is reached.

This means players should not lose an Extreme account because they died somewhere that the game already treats as a safe activity.

Massive NPC Interaction Repair

Alongside the headline content, one of the biggest pieces of maintenance work recently has been repairing NPC interactions following the migration towards the newer 377 NPC and map data.

Over time, many maps began spawning newer NPC config symbols while older RuneScript operation handlers were still registered against the previous NPC names. Visually the NPC would appear correctly in the world, but options such as Talk-to, Trade, Assignment, Equipment, Pickpocket, travel interactions and item-on-NPC actions could silently stop working.

We have now gone through well over a hundred affected NPC interactions and mappings, comparing the older NPC configs against their newer 377 counterparts and restoring the correct operation bindings.

This involved far more than simply replacing names. Many NPC families use category-wide handlers, meaning a whole family of NPCs may already be correctly handled through a shared trigger such as banker, shopkeeper or Slayer Master logic. We therefore audited the real runtime resolution path rather than creating hundreds of unnecessary duplicate scripts.

Slayer Masters were one particularly important example. The newer NPCs could appear and offer options correctly, but some internal Slayer logic still compared the physical NPC type against the old config names. This could have resulted in the wrong task tier being selected even though the interaction itself appeared to work. That logic has now been corrected to use the proper logical Slayer Master identity rather than relying on outdated physical NPC symbols.

We also discovered and corrected several false-positive NPC mappings where two completely different characters happened to share the same display name. These were deliberately left separate rather than blindly merging them.

This work has significantly improved the reliability of older quests, shops, Slayer content, transport NPCs and general world interactions across the newer map data.

Quest Skip Compatibility

Quest skipping has also received additional compatibility work. Some world-access checks were still looking only at the normal quest completion state and did not recognise a quest that had been deliberately skipped through the server's skip system.

Most recently, A Priest in Peril was corrected so skipped players can properly pass the relevant temple, mausoleum and Morytania access checks without the game incorrectly treating the quest as incomplete.

This uses the same compatibility approach already established for other quest access requirements: a skipped quest satisfies world-access and prerequisite checks without replaying rewards, XP, quest points or completion sequences.

Bot Economy & Local Player Bots

The local player bot system has continued to receive a large amount of development as we move towards making the world feel more populated and believable.

Bots now use many of the same semantic interaction paths as real players rather than relying entirely on direct scripted shortcuts. This includes banking, NPC interaction, shops, movement and other activities.

Recent economy work has focused heavily on how bots handle gathered resources. Bank Sale resources such as logs, ores, bars, fish and other materials are intended to be retained for player-to-player trading rather than simply being dumped into NPC shops.

The older Bank Sale system is being restored around this principle: a bot can gather and bank suitable materials, withdraw them in noted form, stand around the bank advertising its stock and wait for a real player to send a trade request. The trade then uses the genuine player trade interface, including item offers, coin checks and both acceptance stages.

We have also continued improving bot food preparation, banking, fishing, cooking, combat preparation, activity selection, pathing and login/logout behaviour. The long-term goal is for bots to behave much more like imperfect real players rather than simple stationary NPCs.

What's Next?

With Terror Tower now providing a strong framework for repeatable high-risk boss content and Extreme Ironman giving players a completely new way to approach account progression, the focus can increasingly shift towards polishing the wider world and continuing the 377 content migration.

There is still plenty more to do, including further NPC and location interaction migration, more boss polish, additional Terror Tower rewards, continued bot improvements and more world content.

Thank you to everyone who has been testing, reporting issues and helping us uncover the strange edge cases that only appear once real players get their hands on these systems. Terror Tower in particular has already gone through a huge amount of iteration, and it has been great seeing the system survive longer runs and increasingly complicated encounters.

As always, keep the bug reports, suggestions and feedback coming. There is a lot more on the way.
